The Dorper Breed

A Dorper is a fast growing meat producing sheep that is known for its ability to adapt and survive in a variety of climatic and grazing conditions. The breed was orginally developed in South Africa in the 1930's by the crossing of a Dorset Horn Ram and a Blackhead Persian Ewe. The name 'Dorper' is a coupling of the first syllables of the parent breed Dorset and Persian. The breed has the characteristic black head (known as Dorpers) as well as white heads (known as White Dorpers).

Characteristics of the Dorper include
  • Low maintenance - minimal shearing required if any, flystrike resistant, no mulesing required at all
  • Adaptability to and hardiness for a variety of climatic and grazing conditions
  • High fertility and reproduction rates
  • Shedding of wool and hair according to seasonal conditions
  • Excellent mothering qualities and milk production
  • High growth rates with the ability to achieve maximum growth from little feed
  • Good muscling and low fat scores - excellent for the domestic export trade
  • Known to be resistant to parasites which reduces the need to drench and used treatment for protection
